Revitalizing Old Maui High

Alumna Patsy T. Mink

U.S. Representative Patsy Takaemoto Mink (graduated 1944)

The new design for the site is intended, in the words of a recent Friends of Maui High School newsletter, to "respect its past while providing a dynamic, sustainable future which will serve the community as a model for individual and environmental education."

Elements of the New Facility

  • Patsy T. Mink Center, a social service and education center for people in need and named after the school's most famous graduate
  • an "overnight camp," plus recreation areas
  • a retreat center focusing on demonstration sites for renewable energy and building materials
  • 5 acres of agricultural fields which will demonstrate organic methods for growing food and other crops.
Barbara Long, president of Friends of Maui High School, describes the motivation behind the new facility: "Because of our isolation from the rest of the world during such a time of environmental importance, we wanted the new facility to enable community members and others to find unique solutions to environmental problems and questions, and in this way continue Old Maui High's role as a really important source of inspiration."
