Green Building
Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle.

In 2002, a Community Work Day gathered alumni, preservationists, and volunteers to revitalize the school area. In 2004, Friends of Old Maui High School was created to work on the reconstruction and reuse of the facility. This organization received an EPA Congressional Special Purpose grant in 2006 to use green building techniques in the renovation.
Why Is This Project Significant?
- The site will provide a resource for Maui and has historic significance.
- The project supports EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge.
- The project creates an example for other similar green building projects.
- Reuse is especially important on an island, where there is little area for landfills.
Why is Green Building so Important?
- Across the country, 331 million tons of construction and demolition debris are generated every year.
- In a 1996 study, this amounted to the generation of 2.8 tons of building-related debris per person per day.
- Saves virgin resources!
- Prevents excess greenhouse gas emissions!
