Alternative Fuel Vehicles
As its primary focus in the alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) project, EPA Region 9 chose to explore the problems resulting from vehicular traffic in and out of airports. To reduce this pollution, EPA promoted the use of AFVs to targeted airport audiences, and began groundwork for developing a college degree program that focuses on AFVs
Promoting public awareness
EPA produced the brochure, “Guide to Ground Transportation at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX),” to assist travelers get in and out of LAX using only alternative fuel vehicles. Thirteen thousand copies were distributed to courtesy counters at the eight LAX terminals.

Finding solutions through higher education
EPA met with local technical college faculties, and representatives of California community colleges where courses in alternative fuel vehicles were (or soon would be) part of the regular academic program. Attendees discussed creating a two-year degree program for graduates to study airport operations and/or environmental management. Either program of study would include a strong element of the other.
