Green Building Demonstration Project - City of Fresno
The City of Fresno made a big step towards a greener city with the February 26th unveiling of their Green Building Demonstration Project. Approximately seventy designers, builders and community leaders attended the grand opening event that took place at one of the six, single-family affordable homes scattered throughout the city. The project, which was funded by grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Housing and Urban Development incorporated alternative building methods such as solar energy, energy efficient appliances, structurally insulated panels, and many other green building features.
The grant from the EPA was funded under the Resource Conservation Fund, a grant program supporting resource reduction, reuse and recycling. This grant supported the research and analysis of the demonstration project, specifically that green buildings have comparable construction costs to conventional buildings, use significantly less energy, can be constructed with a large reduction of the waste stream and appeal to home-buyers from all income levels. The final report and findings will be distributed widely to nonprofit groups, local governments and proponents of affordable, sustainable housing.
