Superfund is EPA's program to identify, investigate and clean up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites throughout the United States. The program was established in 1980 when Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), better known as Superfund.

With the support of our states, tribes and communities, the Superfund program in Region 9 has identified more than 5000 hazardous waste sites. Of these, 124 sites have been placed on the National Priorities List and have been or are being cleaned up under EPA's authority.

Superfund is also home to EPA Region 9's Emergency Prevention, Preparedness, and Response activities under Superfund law, the Community Right to Know Act, the Clean Air Act Risk Management Plan Regulations, and the Clean Water Act as amended by the 1990 Oil Pollution Act.
