Endangered Species: Save Our Species Information - Shortnose Sturgeon

Sturgeon
Shortnose Sturgeon

This 3-foot long fish can live to be 50 years old. It lives in the bays and mouths of rivers along the Atlantic coast from Canada to Florida. At night it hunts along the sea floor. In the spring, the sturgeon returns to the freshwater streams where it was born to lay eggs. However, in some cases, dams on these rivers have prevented this fish from swimming back to its breeding areas.
