Endangered Species: Save Our Species Information- Black Footed Ferret

The black-footed ferret depends mainly on prairie dogs for food and shelter. It lives in their underground tunnels and hunts them for food at night. When prairie dogs started disappearing from the Great Plains, these ferrets vanished too. In 1986, 18 ferrets were moved to a Wyoming research institute, and their numbers increased.  Because this program was so successful, ferrets are being re-introduced into other managed wildlife areas in the United States.
