TRI for Communities

The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a starting point for communities to learn about toxic chemicals that industrial facilities are using and releasing into the environment, and whether those facilities are doing anything to prevent pollution.
TRI Community Basics
- TRI Program Overview Fact Sheet: Overview of TRI basics for communities in a two-page handout.
- Introduction to TRI for Communities: Educational slideshow.
- TRI Photo-Storybook: "Fotonovela" introduction to TRI for communities in Spanish and English.
- Explore a TRI Facility: Take a look inside a fictional TRI facility to learn about how and where TRI chemicals are used, and what data get reported to EPA.
Information About Your Community
You can find information about toxic chemical releases and pollution prevention activities at industrial facilities in your area right from the TRI homepage.
TRI Community Uses

EPA leads a TRI community engagement pilot training workshop in South Philadelphia.
You can use TRI data for many purposes. EPA produced the products below to test out ways to make TRI more accessible, understandable and useful for communities. We encourage you to use these as models to create materials for your own community:
- TRI community snapshots for EPA pilot communities
- South Philadelphia mapping project
