Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program

Toxic Chemical Risk and Health Resources

Many online resources contain valuable information about toxic chemicals; some of these are listed here.

  • Air Pollution and Health Risk: Find out how we know when a risk from a hazardous substance is serious. Learn how researchers estimate risk, and how the government uses this information to develop regulations that limit our exposure to hazardous substances.
  • EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS): View EPA human health assessment information for more than 550 chemical substances. The IRIS database contains descriptive and quantitative carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk information.
  • EPA's National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA): View EPA's ongoing comprehensive evaluation of air toxics in the U.S. NATA is a screening tool local, state and tribal agencies can use to prioritize pollutants, emission sources and locations of interest for further study in order to gain a better understanding of risks. The most recent version of NATA is from 2005.
  • Right-To-Know Network (RTKNET): Access TRI and other environmental information through various search options. Dataset is updated once a year and based on the final dataset used for the TRI National Analysis.Exit
  • TOXNET (TOXicology data NETwork): Search a group of databases covering toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health and related areas. TOXNET is provided by the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
  • TOXMAP: Visually explore TRI and Superfund Program data by location, chemical, release medium/amount and facility name/ID. Map also overlays demographic, income and health data. This is a Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Tox Town: Interactively learn about commonly-encountered toxic substances, your health and the environment by searching for information about a neighborhood, location or chemical. Tox Town's target audience is students above elementary-school level, educators and the general public. Tox Town also offers some resources in Spanish.
