Grand Calumet River Area of Concern

The Grand Calumet River was designated as an Area of Concern under the 1987 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. $288 million from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative's Great Lakes Legacy Act program is used to remediate and restore this AOC for removal from the binational list of AOCs.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently carrying out multiple projects in the AOC. Dredging to remove sediments and debris from the waterways was completed at the end of 2012.

  • EPA awarded a contract to remediate contaminated sediments in Zone C of the West Branch between Hohman Ave and the Illinois/Indiana state line. Work to begin in 2015 with completion in early 2016.
  • Wetlands and nearshore habitats will be restored with native plants following the completion of the dredging.
