China ranks first in the world in coal production – more than 3.6 billion metric tons in 2012 – and is also the largest emitter of coal mine methane (CMM) emissions, which are projected to exceed 420 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2E) by 2020. An overview of China's coal mining history and current methane recovery and use efforts can be found in the Global Methane Initiative Coal Mine Methane Country Profile: China (June 2015) (PDF) (18 pp, 2 MB) Exit.
