Naphthalene is the chemical used in mothballs. Short-term exposure to naphthalene by breathing it, ingesting it, or touching it can lead to damage to the liver, blood, nervous system, or eyes. Long-term exposure to naphthalene can cause eye damage. EPA has classified naphthalene as a chemical that could cause cancer.
