C-FERST Issue Profile: Mold

Mold is a small fungus that helps break down and decay organic materials such as plants. Molds are part of the natural environment, and are found everywhere indoors and outdoors.  Mold is not usually a problem, but it can become a problem when it grows abundantly indoors. When this happens, human exposure to mold may increase and cause negative health effects such as allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory problems.

While there is no practical way to eliminate all mold from indoor environments, indoor mold growth can be controlled by reducing indoor moisture.  EPA is working to help people reduce their exposure to indoor mold by providing resources on how to reduce mold in schools, commercial buildings and homes.
