Field Trips

In keeping with the conference theme of environmental sustainability, the facilities visited on the field trips promoted recycling and recovery of valuable resources. These ranged from the seemingly mundane and small scale -- cooking oil -- to major environmental concerns -- municipal solid waste, energy and wastewater.

Pacific Biodiesel Inc.

Pacific Biodiesel Inc. is a pioneer in the production of premium biodiesel from recycled cooking oil. Using a single stage to process 100% recycled cooking oil into cleaner, safer diesel engine fuel for transportation, stand-by generation, heating and air conditioning. This facility on Oahu produces 400,000 gallons per year. Pacific Biodiesel Inc. also operates plants on Maui, Hawaii and in Nagano, Japan.

HPower

A waste energy recovery plant, HPower is designed to handle 2,000 tons of municipal waste and produces 6% of Oahu's power needs. The electricity generated at the plant is used to operate the plant. Any excess electricity is sold to Hawaiian Electric Company. $26 million dollars worth of electricity was sold to Hawaiian Electric last year. At $60 per ton, the tipping station generated $34 million dollars.

Honouliuli Water Recycling Facility

Opened in August 2000, the Board of Water Supply's Honouliuli Water Reclamation Facility recycles wastewater to serve irrigation and industrial needs in Ewa, Oahu. Recycled water is safe for human contact, but it is not intended for drinking.
