TRI Reporting Using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
Rule Summary
In 2006, EPA updated the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) regulations to include the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. EPA conducted a careful crosswalk between the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) codes covered under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and their corresponding NAICS codes. Facilities may now rely on the list of covered NAICS codes to determine whether they are required to report to the TRI Program.
Rule History
On April 9, 1997, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a Federal Register Notice of final decision to adopt NAICS for the United States, a new economic classification system that replaced the SIC system that had traditionally been used by the federal government for collecting and organizing industry-related statistics.
