Mercury Production: National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants
Rule Summary
On April 6, 1973, the U.S. EPA promulgated the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Mercury. The standards were then amended in 1975 and in 1987. The standards limit emissions from mercury ore processing, sludge incineration and drying plants, and mercury-cell chlor-alkali plants, as follows: air emissions from mercury ore processing facilities and mercury cell chlor-alkali plants shall not exceed 2.3 kg of mercury per 24-hour period; and air emissions from sludge incineration plants, sludge drying plants, or a combination of these that process wastewater treatment plant sludges shall not exceed 3.2 kg of mercury per 24-hour period.
