SO2 Data Requirements Rule State Pathway Notifications

Under the SO2 Data Requirements Rule (DRR), air agencies were required, by July 1, 2016, to notify EPA of their selected approach for characterizing air quality around each SO2 source that is subject to 40 CFR 51.1203. The DRR provided state air agencies with the following four options for meeting the DRR pathway requirement:

  1. Air quality modeling.
  2. Air quality monitoring.
  3. Adopt federally enforceable emission limits for a source to reduce emissions below 2,000 tpy, unless further air quality characterization is required in the judgment of the air agency or EPA.
  4. Submit documentation that a source has permanently shut down by January 13, 2017.
