Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Pollution

SO2 Data Requirements Rule Source List

The SO2 Data Requirements Rule (DRR) states that air agencies must, at a minimum, identify and characterize air quality around SO2 sources that emit 2,000 tons per year (tpy) or more of SO2 and submit a list of sources to EPA by January 15, 2016 based on the most recently available annual emissions data.

To help identify maximum 1-hour SO2 concentrations in ambient air, the SO2 (sulfur dioxide) the DRR provides air agencies the option to:

1) to provide data to characterize current ambient SO2 air quality through modeling or monitoring in areas with large sources of SO2; or

2) to establish federally enforceable emission limits for a source that ensures that the source will emit less than 2,000 tpy of SO2.

This list was posted on April 13, 2016, and was amended on May 24, 2016, to remove a source in the state of Texas, and was amended on June 28, 2016, to remove two sources in the state of Minnesota. The letters from Texas and from Minnesota to EPA requesting removal of these sources, and EPA’s responses, are posted in the Data Requirements Rule (DRR) Source List PDF below.
