Regulations for Emissions from Marine Vessels
EPA regulates a variety of marine vessels ranging in size and application from personal yachts boats to large ocean-going vessels. This web page contains information specific to marine diesel engines.
Diesel marine engines emit significant amounts of pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), both of which have serious public health effects.
New marine diesel engines must meet increasingly stringent emissions requirements. EPA has a coordinated strategy to address emissions from large ships in the United States and internationally. EPA’s coordinated strategy includes:
- EPA domestic actions under the Clean Air Act; and
- U.S. Government action through the International Maritime Organization.
Combined, these actions make a comprehensive program that is expected to significantly improve U.S. air quality and public health.
