Design for the Environment Pesticide Pilot: Moving Toward the Green End of the Pesticide Spectrum

EPA established a pilot program, the Design for the Environment Pesticide Pilot Project to help consumers find products that are more toward the green end of the pesticide spectrum. This program allows qualifying antimicrobial and biopesticide products to carry a logo on their pesticide labels that indicates the product meets certain criteria. The pilot project runs through May 3, 2016.

The pilot requires that products and inert ingredients be reviewed against the Safer Choice standard.

Currently, two classes of pesticides have procedures in place to participate in this program. See more information about the requirements:

How We Developed the Pesticide DfE Program

We often hear from the public that they are looking for products that are more toward the green end of the pesticide spectrum. In addition to reminding consumers to Read the Label First, we have been working with the Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee to develop a way to allow consumers to easily identify greener pesticide products at the point of purchase. Modeled after EPA's Safer Choice program, the Design for the Environment Biopesticide Pesticide Pilot Project is allowing the use of a DfE logo on qualifying biopesticide and antimicrobial product labels.
