MDEQ receives a $5.2 million grant from NOAA to develop and implement a dredging plan.

2010

MDEQ (MDNRE at the time) releases an updated BUI Restoration guide for each of the BUIs in the Michigan Areas of Concern.

2009

Sampling results meet the removal criteria for the beach closings impairment.

The third BUI is removed.

New data reveals Manistique River has evolved to support a diverse fish community.

Monitoring is conducted to evaluate the status of the restrictions on fish and wildlife consumption and restrictions on dredging beneficial use impairments.


MDEQ issues updated Guidance for Delisting Michigan’s Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

2007 Monitoring is conducted to evaluate the status of the Beach Closings beneficial use impairment.
2006

The first BUI is removed.

Benthos monitoring continues at the site.


The Manistique River Public Advisory Council adopts the delisting targets included in the Guidance for Delisting Michigan's Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

2005    An ecological risk assessment is released which focuses on those media that ecological receptors can be exposed to sediment and whole body fish.
2002

Water samples are collected in which five zones of concern ard identified. The sampling evaluates the extent of horizontal and vertical contamination in these five areas.

2001 Confirmation sediment sampling demobilization of treatment systems and temporary containment systems is conducted.
2000 Dredging of contaminated sediments begins.
1999/2000 U.S. EPA conducts "touch-up" dredging based on confirmation sampling of the dredged areas.
1997/1998 U.S. EPA conducts Time Critical Removal Action No. 3 - Dredge Areas C (near CSO) & D (Harbor)
1996 U.S. EPA conducts Time Critical Removal Action No. 2- Dredging of Area B (North Bay)
1996

Washed gravel is placed in the North Bay area, located on the west side of the river upstream.
