EPA Collaboration with Egypt

Egypt is an important trading partner with the United States, with a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement since 1999. In June 2009, President Obama spoke in Cairo, Egypt about the importance of partnerships in science and technology, and launched the “Initiative on Science and Technology (S&T) Engagement with the Muslim World.”

Jointly managed by the State Department and the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, this Initiative focuses on the role science and technology can play as a catalyst for collaboration between the United States and Muslim countries. Building on the idea that scientists and engineers have long been pioneers in international collaboration, the goal is to provide economic development, opportunity, education, and innovation.

Activities

Risk Assessment Training at Cairo University

In coordination with the United States Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, EPA scientists provided training on “Risk Assessment as a Critical Tool for Everyday Challenges” at Cairo University Exit from May 16-20, 2012. The course was sponsored by the Toxicology & Forensic Medicine Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University.

The comprehensive training covered current, state-of-the-art risk assessment practices as used and implemented by EPA. The training was attended by more than 300 participants, both male and female, including university faculty, graduate students, industry, and government officials.

The course offered hands-on training in the primary areas of risk assessment (i.e., hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, risk characterization), as well as in risk communication. Outreach to the public and other stakeholders is essential to the successful implementation of risk assessment.
