Partner Spotlight – Walmart
This month’s Spotlight features Walmart. Ragan Dickens, the company’s director of sustainability communications, answered some questions about Walmart’s green power use.
Green Power Partnership: Partner Spotlight Q&A
Q. What motivated your organization to use green power?
A. Ten years ago, Walmart set forth three ambitious sustainability goals, including the goal to be supplied by 100 percent renewable energy. Our commitment to renewable energy is not only the right choice for the environment, it's also a smart choice for our business. Renewable energy can offer several business benefits including stable, and often reduced, energy costs.
Q. Tell us about your organization’s green power procurement?
A. With projects in 17 states, as of 2015 we use more than 826 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually in the form of solar, wind, and other renewables. More than half of that green power comes from a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Pattern Energy to procure about 58 percent of the output from Logan's Gap Wind, which is a 200 megawatt (MW) facility in Comanche County, Texas.
Globally, we've installed or are contracted for more than 2 billion kWh annually from more than 470 projects, which makes us more than 30 percent of the way toward our renewable energy goal. At the end of 2015, we were also halfway to our worldwide energy efficiency goal by operating with 10 percent less energy per square foot compared to our 2010 baseline.
We have found that PPAs are a highly effective model to leverage our scale and buying power to accelerate renewables. Under these arrangements, we agree to buy renewable power from an energy provider over a long period of time – often 5, 10, 15+ years. Long-term PPAs have unlocked enormous renewable potential—and have proven to be mutually beneficial for Walmart and the energy provider.
Q. Describe any innovative green power strategies your organization has, or is planning to implement.
A. We're always looking for the next innovation when it comes to green power. For example, we recently embarked on a pilot test of on-site Tesla solar batteries with some of our California stores, and we are evaluating this technology for possible expansion into other markets.
We also want to help make sourcing renewable energy easier for more companies. As many large American companies have begun the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in the past five years, they've often found the process complicated and time-consuming. To simplify such negotiations and speed them along, World Wildlife Fund and World Resources Institute created the Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers' Principles: Increasing Access to Renewable Energy. We are proud to be both a signatory to the Principles and a funder, and aim to engage with other companies who are exploring and implementing renewable energy systems while sharing best practices.
Q. What do you see as the benefits of using green power and what role does it currently play in your organization's broader business and environmental strategy?
Green power sourcing plays a key role in our overall goal to reduce GHG emissions in our operations. Over the period from 2005-2014, Walmart has limited our emissions growth to less than one-third of our business growth rate during the same period. To reduce emissions, we're focused on investing in scalable, renewable energy sources, reducing our energy demand through efficiency, and maximizing the efficiency of our fleet, among other initiatives. Walmart recognizes that addressing emissions across the global supply chain is as significant an issue as addressing them in our own operations. That's why we're engaging directly with suppliers worldwide to create more impact than would be possible on our own. Advancing the use of green power in our own operations allows us to engage and encourage our suppliers to also invest in green power to reduce emissions in their operations and supply chain. We also participate in organizations such as the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and RE100 that work to unlock the barriers to clean and renewable energy for corporations in the United States and globally.
Q. Does your organization have a green power or carbon footprint reduction goal? If so, what is it and how do you plan to achieve it?
A. By 2025, we aim to power half of our operations from renewable sources. We'll accomplish this through continued investment in clean energy sources, including solar and wind power.
Walmart is also the first retailer with an emissions-reduction plan approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative, in alignment with the Paris Climate Agreement. Under the recently approved plan, we will use a combination of energy-efficiency measures, together with expanded use of renewable energy, to reduce emissions of our own operations by 18 percent by 2025.
Additionally, we will work with suppliers to reduce emissions by 1 Gigaton by 2030. We recognize that the attainment of this goal will require the collective effort of our suppliers, customers, associates, and stakeholder partners.
Q. What advice would you give to other organizations interested in using green power, and is there anything you would do differently?
A. To create real systems change in advancing supply chain efficiency – including green power – companies can’t go at it alone. We encourage those interested in pursuing green power use to seek counsel from peers in their industry who are currently using renewable energy, as well as consult respected NGOs, renewable energy leaders, and industry groups for guidelines, including the U.S. EPA and the Renewable Energy Buyer’s Alliance (REBA), Business Renewables Center (BRC), which can provide valuable insight into sourcing approach and strategy. We certainly reach out to our colleagues in the renewable energy space for insight, so we’re happy to be a resource to other organizations.
Q. How do you communicate your green power use to consumers, employees, and other stakeholders?
A. We measure and report on our progress each year through our Global Responsibility Report and CDP Climate Investor response, and we also host an annual Milestone Meeting on sustainability updates for our associates and leadership. We maintain regular communication with key stakeholders, including our suppliers and NGOs, to keep them updated on our progress, as well as foster an ongoing dialogue around continuous improvement. In addition, we report our green power use to GPP annually, which is publicly available on the Partnership's website. We highlight our commitment to using renewables on our Walmart Today blog and through our @WalmartToday Twitter handle to reach consumers with the latest sustainability news.
Q. How has being an EPA Green Power Partner benefited your organization? Why do you think GPP is a good program to join?
A. We're proud to be number three on the Green Power Partnership Top 30 Retail list, representing the largest green power users among retail partners within the Green Power Partnership. We are also very proud to have ranked first for the most installed on-site renewable capacity for the past several years. Belonging to this network of like-minded organizations adds to our credibility as a company that takes the need for green energy use seriously.

GPP by the Numbers
On-site solar continues to gain popularity as a green power source. In fact, as of November 2016, on-site solar is the most popular form of self-generation among Green Power Partners.
Out of the nearly 738 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of solar produced on-site annually among all Partners, the retail sector uses approximately 266 million kWh, or 36 percent. The technology and telecommunications sector follows retail, using more than 106 million kWh in on-site solar. The local government sector uses nearly 70 million kWh, followed by state government with more than 54million kWh and higher education with nearly 51 million kWh.

New Renewable Energy Project Development Tool Box
EPA's Green Power Partnership has developed a new online resource that features solutions that address economic, policy, and administrative barriers identified by the higher education sector in the deployment of solar energy projects. This toolbox examines six topic areas – including policies and regulations, economic assessments, financing and funding opportunities – that have important implications for developing these on-site solar projects on college and university campuses. Each topic area offers a brief summary of the issue, identifies key resources, and addresses major questions and hurdles key campus sustainability experts have identified as information gaps or obstacles in their development of new solar projects. There is also a comprehensive resource library with content that can be arranged by sector, target user, or by issue area.
GPP developed this new web area under an Interagency Agreement with DOE's Solar Energy Technologies Office. Learn more »
