GPP Webinar: Solar Carports: Turning University Parking Facilities into Renewable Electricity Plants

Today, there are an estimated 5,300 colleges and universities in the United States, and together, those campus facilities contain millions of parking spaces. This webinar explores how colleges and universities can transform underutilized parking facilities into solar power generation systems. By installing on-site solar, institutions can better control their energy costs, reduce their carbon footprints, meet stated renewable energy goals, and develop real-world teaching tools. In addition, solar carports shade and protect cars from the elements, reduce parking lot temperatures, and are a highly visible reminder of a school’s commitment to renewable energy.

The webinar will feature two case studies of universities with solar carport projects.

Michigan State University is outfitting five of its parking lots with solar parking bays for a total of 10 megawatts, which are anticipated to meet five percent of the campus' power needs.

Point Loma Nazarene University is home to 620 kilowatts of solar that spans two rooftops and five solar carports. The university financed its solar carports through a 20-year power purchase agreement.

GPP Webinar: State of the Voluntary Green Power Market

On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm (EST), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership (GPP) will host a webinar examining the state of the green power market within the United States.

This webinar will focus primarily on the voluntary market, through which consumers and institutions voluntarily procure renewable energy for all or part of their electricity needs. The webinar will review:

The various green power product options
Where these products are available
Resource and pricing information
The most up-to-date statistics and trends in green power purchasing
The emergence of new green power procurement options, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), community solar programs, and community choice aggregations
Spotlight on large green power customers

The presentations will draw heavily from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's recently published Status and Trends in the U.S. Voluntary Green Power Market (PDF) as well as the Green Power Partnership's program data.

Green Power Leadership Awards: A Review of 2017 Categories, Eligibility, Criteria, and the Application Process

The 2017 Green Power Leadership Awards application period will open on January 26 and will close on March 24. EPA co-sponsors the Awards in conjunction with the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS). The awards recognize leading organizations that have helped further the green power market through their green power procurement, innovation, overall green power strategy, and impact.

In this webinar, EPA and CRS will provide information related to eligibility, evaluation criteria, and application content for each of the award categories, and will also answer questions.
