Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanup in Zone A - West Branch Reaches 3,4,5 completed: dredging and related restoration projects, and the remediation of 580,000 cubic yards of sediment. Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanup in the Roxana Marsh portion of the West Branch of Grand Calumet River is completed: 150,000 cubic yards of sediment remediated. The first BUI is removed.
It is determined that there is no increased cost of shipping due to inability to dredge in the harbor and ship canal for environmental reasons. |
2010 |
U.S. Steel completes further in-stream restoration projects. They implement riffles, bank scalloping, boulder piles, wing deflectors with snags and native species planting along the riverbank. |
2004-2005 |
The Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act takes effect. A $56 million settlement is announced pursuant to the 2001 Natural Resource Damage Assessment. |
2001 |
IDEM and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service release the sediment injury report for the Grand Calumet River as part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment. The report identifies nine responsible parties that released hazardous substances into the water column. |
1999 |
The United States and the State of Indiana enter into a consent decree with the Hammond Sanitary District in which $2.1 million dollars are paid into the Grand Calumet River Restoration Fund trust. A schedule is established to implement the Wastewater Treatment Plant Compliance Program. |
