Coal Mine Methane (CMM) Recovery Opportunities Map

Coal Mine Methane Recovery at Active and Abandoned U.S. Coal Mines: Current Projects and Potential Opportunities

This map and accompanying matrix provide information about current projects and potential opportunities to develop coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and utilization projects at active U.S. coal mines. The information presented is a condensed version of the Coalmine Methane Outreach Program’s (CMOP) report Identifying Opportunities for Methane Recovery at U.S. Coal Mines: Profiles of Selected Gassy Underground Coal Mines 2002-2006 (January 2009). While the report was last revised in 2009, mine data reported in both the map and the accompanying Coal Mine Methane Recovery at Active and Abandoned U.S. Coal Current Projects and Potential Opportunities (March 2015) was updated in March 2015 to reflect the 2012 production year.*

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) designed the profiles to help project developers perform an initial screening of potential projects. A detailed evaluation would need to be done on a site-specific basis in order to determine whether the development of a specific methane recovery and use project is both technically and economically feasible.

*NOTE: Data was derived from publically-available sources and has not been verified by CMOP or the mine.
