Arsenic Rule Compliance for Community Water System Owners and Operators
Arsenic Rule Compliance
Compliance with the Arsenic Rule requires additional monitoring and community water system actions beyond compliance with the chemical contaminants rules.
Quick Reference Guide to Arsenic and Clarifications to Compliance and New Source Monitoring Rule
This document provides a simple and straightforward summary of the rule. It includes critical deadlines and requirements for PWSs and states, and information on monitoring requirements.

Arsenic Tools
Virtual Trade Show
EPA has developed a site to help PWSs come into compliance with the Arsenic Rule. The website contains:
- Brief treatment technology descriptions,
- The interactive decision trees,
- Questions to ask engineers and vendors when choosing a treatment technology, and
- A searchable vendor database.
Visit the Arsenic Virtual Trade Show website.
Arsenic Treatment Technology Evaluation Handbook for Small Systems
This handbook includes arsenic treatment information, cost evaluation tools, and design considerations for treatment technologies. The handbook enables PWSs to make decisions about treatment approaches to address arsenic concerns.
The handbook includes a series of process selection decision trees. These were developed to help systems select the most appropriate arsenic mitigation strategy.

The decision trees contained in this document were current when the handbook was published in 2003. They are still relevant and can provide a simple guide for selecting an arsenic treatment. However, EPA has modified the trees since publication to reflect changes in regulation and treatment technologies.
More Information on Arsenic Treatment Technologies
EPA's Office of Research and Development is focusing on research and development of more cost effective technologies. ORD is conducting:
- treatment technology demonstration projects;
- short-term performance verification studies of commercially-ready arsenic treatment technologies;
- research to emphasize management of residuals from arsenic treatment,
- improved analytical methods, treatment process optimization and distribution system studies; and
- developing training materials, software and design manuals and providing direct training and technical assistance on how to meet the arsenic standard.
