21st Annual Pacific Islands Office Environment Conference

Islands have always been areas with limited resources, be these arable lands, sources of drinking water, or the richness of the coral reefs. These limitations were recognized long ago by traditional leaders, and approaches were adopted to ensure that the resources were not over-exploited. However, increases in population, tourism, and exploitation of marine resources have led to a growing reliance on technological remedies.
The 21st Annual Pacific Islands Environment Conference, co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Republic of Palau, will focus on how island communities have traditionally managed their natural resources, and how the lessons learned from these traditional practices can be used to augment modern technology as islands consider stewardship of their resources in the future. Specific sessions will cover drinking water and wastewater treatment, landfill design and operation, watershed protection, coral reef monitoring, the Palau Compact Road, and environmental education and outreach.
Over the past 20 years, the annual Pacific Islands Environment Conference has brought together recognized experts and leaders from across the Pacific and around the world to share experience and knowledge on a variety of topics. Building on the success of last year’s conference on Guam, the 21st annual conference will again provide opportunities for participants to become acquainted and to identify areas of future collaboration and cooperation.
