Along with States/Tribes, the following entities or groups may also be involved in monitoring water quality in a particular jurisdiction:

• Federal agencies (e.g., EPA or USGS as necessary to support their management and research needs).
• Interstate commissions (e.g., working under grants).
• Volunteer and citizen groups (i.e., based on their interest in understanding local waterbody conditions).
• Local government (e.g., city or county environmental offices).
• Private entities (e.g., permitted dischargers, watershed associations, academic institutions).
