Drawing largely from partners active in the Lower Passaic River Community Advisory Group, the Partnership convened to identify community-prioritized projects where interagency coordination could advance projects for improvement.

March, 2016

The Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership participated in a visioning process with Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA). They identified the needs and opportunities for expanding GSWA's scope of work from the source to the sea. 

Improving Interagency Coordination

Newark Riverfront Mapping Pilot: October '15 - May '16

The Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership met with several community and agency partners. They identified a need for greater coordination on ongoing projects along the expansion of Newark's Riverfront Park. In May 2016, the Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership convened a meeting with USACE, EPA, and FEMA, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Essex County, Newark Community Economic Development Corporation, the City of Newark Departments of Engineering and Planning, The Trust for Public Land, NY/NJ Baykeeper, Ironbound Community Corporation, and Friends of the Riverfront Park. At that meeting, partners mapped out ongoing projects and identified opportunities to leverage each partner's capacity. The meeting focused on improved coordination of all overlapping projects and highlighted project interactions.

Connecting Community Partners with Grant Opportunities

The Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership circulates a bi-monthly bulletin with selected grant opportunities, events and resources.

Growing the Constituency for the Lower Passaic River

The Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership is working closely with the Passaic River Coalition and the City of Clifton regarding public access along the stretch of the river south of Dundee Dam and north of Newark. 

May, 2016

With the support of the NY-NJ Harbor and Estuary Program (HEP), the Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership, Ironbound Community Corporation, and the Passaic River Community Advisory Group co-hosted a public workshop to identify the needs and opportunities for the Lower Passaic River as a whole relative to HEP's five goals: 

1. Water Quality;
2. Habitat Restoration;
3. Public Access;
4. Sediment/Port Management;
5. Public Education.

Feedback from the meeting will be integrated into HEP's 2017 Five Year Action Plan. Over the summer, the Lower Passaic River Urban Waters Federal Partnership will build off this meeting to continue pulling in new partners from local municipalities, community organizations and agencies.
