Papelera Puertorriqueña, Inc.

The Papelera Puertorriqueña, Inc. (PPI) Superfund site is located in Utuado, Puerto Rico. Since 1965, on-site PPI operations included the manufacture of paper and plastic bags and cardboard boxes. Investigations found that site activities resulted in the contamination of soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater with volatile organic compounds. In 2009, EPA added the site to the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL). EPA is currently in the process of investigating the full extent of contamination and choosing a final cleanup plan for the site. PPI continues to operate on the property throughout the investigation and cleanup planning phases. Today, the business continues to manufacture paper and plastic bags and cardboard boxes. PPI also stores and distributes greetings cards and paper giftwraps on the site.

San German Ground Water Contamination

The San German Ground Water Contamination Superfund site is located in San German, Puerto Rico. The site includes a large part of the City of San German, the Gaunajibo River, surrounding agricultural land, residences and the Retiro Industrial Park. From 2001 to 2005, the Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDOH) collected groundwater samples from area wells. The samples showed contamination and PRDOH ordered that remaining wells be closed. In 2006, EPA soil sampling determined that two buildings within the Retiro Industrial Park were the source of the contamination. EPA placed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in March 2008. Groundwater and soil cleanup continue at the site while businesses continue to operate in the Retiro Industrial Park. Preparations for a new on-site bridge began in 2014.
