A progress report is released summarizing improvements made in the AOC.


The Marysville “Living Shoreline” project is completed. The more natural shoreline that was constructed will greatly improve fish and wildlife habitat.

2012

Two more beneficial use impairments are removed.

  • Tainting of fish and wildlife flavor
  • Degradation of Aesthetics

2011

The second beneficial use impairment is removed.

  • Added costs to agriculture or industry

2010

MDEQ (MDNRE at the time) releases an updated BUI Restoration guide for each of the BUIs in the Michigan Areas of Concern.

2009

The first beneficial use impairment is removed.

  • Restriction on dredging activities

2008

An update to the Remedial Action Plan is published.


MDEQ issues updated Guidance for Delisting Michigan’s Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

2006

A report is released regarding the water quality of the Michigan AOC connecting channels between the United States and Canada.

2005

Wetlands are developed on the ICI Phosphate site near Corruna, Ontario to treat wastewater prior before it is discharged into the river. Work on this site is part of a long-term restoration plan.


A 50-acre naturalization project is completed on Terra Industries property, adjacent to the St. Clair River. The project included tree planting and restoration of tall grass prairie and wetlands.


Macomb and St. Clair Counties receive a $1 million dollar federal earmark to establish water quality monitoring for Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River.

2001

The City of Sarnia completes $30 million in sewage treatment upgrades.

St. Clair township also undertakes improvements in wastewater infrastructure.

1991

Stage I of the Remedial Action Plan is published.
