EPA's SmartWay Excellence Awards recognize exceptional achievement among EPA SmartWay Partners.
SmartWay Excellence Awardees lead their industries in reducing climate change and air pollution emissions from freight supply chains. The awardees are chosen from over 3,000 companies and organizations participating in SmartWay.
2016 SmartWay Excellence Awardees
The annual SmartWay Excellence Award honors top shipping (retailers and manufacturers) and logistics company partners for superior environmental performance and additional actions to reduce freight emissions through effective collaboration, operational practices, a robust system for validating and reporting their SmartWay data, and communications and public outreach. The SmartWay Excellence Award also recognizes top truck, barge, and multimodal carrier partners that are setting efficiency benchmarks in how they move products and supplies.
Shippers and logistics companies receiving SmartWay Excellence Awards were recognized on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at 8:30 AM ET during the 2016 Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Annual Conference in Kissimmee, Florida.
Carriers receiving SmartWay Excellence Awards were recognized on Monday, October 3, 2016, at 8 AM PT during the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Annual Management Conference and Exhibition at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Excellence Award Criteria
SmartWay Excellence Awardees are selected based on exceptional environmental performance as demonstrated by their annual freight assessment and carbon tracking tool submissions.
The awardee selections are based on environmental performance as demonstrated by partner data submissions with the SmartWay freight assessment and carbon tracking tools. Additional leadership criteria are considered for shippers and logistics companies.

Summaries of SmartWay Excellence Award Criteria by Partner Category
Shipper Awards
SmartWay shipper semi-finalists are top-performing partners in good standing. EPA identifies a pool of top-performing candidates for consideration based on environmental performance, use of SmartWay Carriers to move their freight, and freight mileage with "large" and "medium/small" mileage categories. These shipper semi-finalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final shipper awardees will be selected from the pool of semi-finalists based on the supplemental information they provide.
Logistics Awards
SmartWay Logistics semi-finalists are top-performing partners in good standing. EPA identifies a pool of top-performing candidates for consideration based on environmental performance, use of SmartWay Carriers to move their freight, and freight mileage with "large" and "medium/small" mileage categories. These logistics semi-finalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final logistics awardees are selected from the pool of semi-finalists identified by EPA based on the supplemental information they provide.
Carrier Awards
SmartWay Carrier awardees are recognized for top environmental performance. EPA identifies partners in good standing that are leaders in freight efficiency based on their SmartWay data within their fleet type and size categories. Large and medium/small carriers will be selected based on their performance within 13 fleet categories.
Also, EPA recognizes multimodal carriers with the SmartWay Excellence Awards. EPA identified a pool of SmartWay Multimodal Carrier semi-finalists that are top-performing partners in good standing as leaders in freight efficiency based on their SmartWay data. These multimodal carrier semi-finalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final multimodal carrier awardees are selected from the pool of semi-finalists identified by EPA based on the supplemental information they provide.
