Stormwater Management Handbook

Implementing Green Infrastructure in Northern Kentucky Communities

Faced with rapid economic growth and a burdened combined sewer system that frequently overflowed, Sanitation District No. 1 in Northern Kentucky sought assistance from EPA's Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program on ways to protect water quality by managing and reducing stormwater runoff.

EPA's team developed the Stormwater Management Handbook (2009), which includes land use policies and strategies that both manage stormwater and create attractive, walkable neighborhoods. The handbook illustrates innovative, site-level design strategies that reduce runoff from development and shows how they can be applied.
