EPA is working with local officials and other community partners in the cities of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, to support redevelopment plans through technical assistance resources, capacity building and training. Brownfields, land revitalization, and smart growth resources could help both cities address a priority concern - abandoned properties.
In Kansas City, Kansas, a county-wide business and community development plan focuses on improving health outcomes by improving access to healthy foods, walking and biking trails, and a range of downtown goods and services.
In Kansas City, Missouri, other priorities include developing urban agriculture, building climate resiliency, and reconnecting overburdened and economically distressed communities to their waterways with support from the federal Urban Waters program.
Wichita, KS
In August 2015, the City of Wichita adopted a Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Comprehensive Investment Plan. EPA is working with the city as it focuses on improving air quality, including strategies on reducing ground level ozone, and improving indoor air quality.
EPA is supporting the community with a grant that enables a local nonprofit to help the community track and understand pollution from local industrial sources. This work will result in training low income community leaders to teach others and advocate for a healthier environment.
EPA is also working with the city to evaluate downtown infill development priorities and improving its infrastructure for water, sewer and stormwater management.
