The city of Denver launched the Living Streets Initiative to transform major streets into vibrant, active, pedestrian- and transit-friendly places. The city asked for help from EPA's Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program to better understand how the concept of living streets could apply to and be implemented in commercial corridors throughout Denver, and to identify policies and actions that would help the city better coordinate land use transportation planning and investments.
The EPA team's report, published in 2009, presents three principles and design strategies to implement living streets along commercial corridors in the city and region:
- Reduce the number of lanes dedicated to cars.
- Create a pedestrian- and transit-friendly streetscape.
- Relate development to the street.
The report also identifies policy actions that can support living streets in Denver.
