OSU student receives $132,000 EPA STAR fellowship Exit (October 2016)
EPA has awarded a Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowship to Christina Murphy, a doctoral student at Oregon State University, for her research on how best to manage dams to protect salmon.
Cal Poly Biology Student Awarded $50,000 EPA Fellowship Exit (October 2016)
Biology senior Samantha Bock spent the summer as an intern with EPA thanks to a Greater Research Opportunity (GRO) Fellowship. The $50,000 fellowship—one of only 34 that EPA awarded nationwide—will also support Bock’s final year of study at Cal Poly.
EPA Awards Environmental Science Fellowships to University of Washington and Washington State University Grad Students (September 2016)
EPA has awarded STAR Fellowships for environmental and public health research to four graduate students at the University of Washington and Washington State University. STAR graduate fellows are selected from a large number of applications in a highly competitive review process. Master’s students are awarded up to $88,000 over two years and PhD students are awarded up to $132,000 over three years to support their graduate research.
EPA Awards More Than $1.6 Million in Environmental Research Fellowships to 13 Students in Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada (September 2016)
EPA announced more than $1.6 million in STAR graduate fellowships for 13 students at universities in Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada. The fellowships, which will allow these students to further their education while conducting environmental research, were part of over $6 million awarded to 52 students across the nation.
Univ. Of Maryland-Eastern Shore Student Selected for EPA Fellowship (June 2016)
EPA announced that a student from University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md. will receive an EPA GRO Fellowship to support environmental studies. Benjamin Barnes, a chemistry major, will receive a $50,000 GRO Fellowship to further his research on greenhouse gas emissions.
Gettysburg College Student Selected for EPA Fellowship (June 2016)
EPA announced that a student from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania will receive an EPA GRO Fellowship to support environmental studies. Micaela Edelson, an economics student, will receive a $50,000 GRO Fellowship, to conduct research on the potential risks that agricultural migrant workers face from pesticides.
Haverford College Student Selected for EPA Fellowship (June 2016)
EPA announced that a student from Haverford College in Pennsylvania will receive an EPA GRO Fellowship to support environmental studies. Hannah Krohn, a political science major with a passion for the environment, will receive a $39,500 fellowship to explore environmental policy and to examine how sound science can be used for future legislative decisions.
Two Dickinson College Students Selected for EPA Fellowships (June 2016)
EPA announced that two students from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. will receive EPA GRO Fellowships to support environmental studies. Caroline Kanaskie, an environmental science major and Keziah Groth-Tuft, a social science major, will each receive a $50,000 GRO Fellowship. Kanaskie will use this funding to continue her research on the impacts of citizen science projects and Groth-Tuft will use the funding to study how international communities are impacted by water pollution and limited water resources.
College of William & Mary Student Selected for EPA Fellowship (June 2016)
EPA announced that a student from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. will receive an EPA GRO Fellowship to support environmental studies. Nathalie Moore, a biology student at William and Mary, will receive a $50,000 fellowship to expand on her research about invasive plants.
Two Lafayette College Students Selected for EPA Fellowships to Support Next Generation of Environmental Scientists (June 2016)
EPA announced that two students from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. will receive EPA GRO Fellowships to support environmental studies. Rachel Elias, a chemical engineering major and Aliza Furneaux, an environmental science major, will each receive a $50,000 GRO Fellowship. Elias will use this funding for research on optimizing the use of biodiesel engines in colder climates and Furneaux will use the funding for research on the impacts of nitrogen as a pollutant.
EPA Awards Fellowship to Missouri S&T Environmental Engineering Student to Further Research (June 2016)
Katherine Bartels, a Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) environmental engineering student in Rolla, Mo., was awarded an EPA GRO Fellowship on Friday, May 20. Ms. Bartels is one of 34 undergraduate students at 28 colleges and universities across the nation to receive fellowships.

EPA announced that Alexander Peterson, at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. is one of 34 undergraduate students at 28 colleges and universities across the nation to receive a GRO Fellowship. The awards, part of EPA's GRO fellowship program, help inspire the next generation of environmental scientists and engineers and provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with agency scientists.
EPA Awards Two Fellowships to Undergraduates at Tennessee Universities Pursuing Environmental Science and Research Degrees (May 2016)
EPA announced Darcy Ayers and Elizabeth Morgan undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and East Tennessee State University were awarded GRO Fellowships totaling $87,000.

EPA announced four undergraduate students at two universities in Kentucky were awarded GRO Fellowships totaling $185,000.

EPA announced that Natalie Smith, at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., is one of 34 undergraduate students at 28 colleges and universities across the nation to receive a GRO Fellowship. The awards help inspire the next generation of environmental scientists and engineers, and provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with agency scientists.
GROing Above and Beyond (May 2016)
Having recently graduated university, I still have early morning classes, long research paper assignments, and three to five hour finals very fresh in my mind. So fresh in fact that some days I find myself still preparing to walk across campus even though I now live a state away. I have to shake the thought off with an exaggerated shudder. When I think about how I made it through those dark times, one thing leaps to the front of my mind—I had a lot of help. If I tried to count the teachers, friends, and employers that inspired and supported me throughout my four year trek in academia I’d run out of fingers and toes. Sometimes it was just a two minute conversation in the hall, other times it was a very scathing paper critique. To use an African proverb commonly quoted today, “It took a village,” a network of people and organizations, to get me emotionally, physically and academically to the finish line.
WCU student awarded EPA fellowship Exit (April 2015)
An undergraduate student at Western Carolina University was awarded EPA’s GRO Fellowship. Marissa Taylor, one of 34 students to receive this award, will receive tuition assistance and has the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with scientists at EPA.
DSU student received environmental research fellowship Exit (December 2014)
Grace Estridge, a Biology major and Chemistry minor at Dakota State University, was awarded an EPA undergraduate environmental research fellowship through the GRO program. For more than 30 years, EPA’s GRO Fellowship has been providing students in environmental science related fields the tools to succeed not only in their undergraduate studies and internship, but also in their future careers.
