EPA Office of Research and Development

NSF Graduate Research Internship Opportunities for NSF Graduate Research Fellows

Current as of November 2016

Opportunity Title:

Development of an innovative measurement method for carbonyls in air

Research Area:

Air

EPA Lab/Center/Office:

National Risk Management Research Laboratory

Location:

Research Triangle Park, NC

Duration:

6-12 months

Brief Summary:

This opportunity involves the development of an innovative measurement method for carbonyls in air which are an important class of hazardous air pollutants.

Opportunity Description:

This research project will focus on developing a novel measurement technique for carbonyls in air, which are an important class of hazardous air pollutants. Accurate carbonyl measurements in air are a critical need for the US EPA, and are used to improve air quality modeling and risk assessments.  However, the current methods for measurement of carbonyls have substantial limitations. This research opportunity involves the evaluation of a new carbonyl sampling and analytical method that utilizes a state-of-the-art thermal desorber with gas chromatograph and time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The feasibility of the new method will be assessed and compared with standard EPA methods, and will be tested out in the lab, in the field and during EPA emissions studies.

Opportunities for Professional Development:

The student will gain experience with air pollution sampling methods, analytical method development and with operation of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation. The student will have numerous opportunities to network with EPA researchers and to participate in collaborative EPA research projects. The student will be able to present their research in scientific conferences and will gain experience with producing peer-reviewed publications.
