Brief Summary:

The Arctic Council Expert Group on Black Carbon and Methane has identified emissions from residential biomass combustion as a significant uncertainty in the global BC inventory for Arctic Nations. This sector accounts for approximately 11 percent of BC emissions from Arctic States.

Opportunity Description:

Develop a database and scientific rationale to capture/inventory both existing and improved residential biomass combustion technologies used in Arctic Nations - Joining the Office of Research and Development team to develop a better understanding of BC emissions, relationship to PM, methods and techniques for measurement, and operating conditions that impact BC emissions from such combustion technologies.

Opportunities for Professional Development:

Any potential climate impacts associated with these residential combustion technologies is not well understood. The intern will work with EPA engineers and scientists and examine the literature to identify key BC sector-related information that can help design the   database structure. Develop knowledge about critical technology information and the important conditions and variables necessary to design impactful and relevant laboratory testing of residential biomass combustion devices.
