Site characterization of fractured rock sites, and modeling groundwater flow and contaminant transport in fractured media, have been identified by the EPA Regional Superfund Ground Water Forum as major issues of concern for decision-makers at many Superfund sites. The ability to reliably predict the rate and direction of ground-water flow and contaminant transport in fractured rock systems would be of great value in planning and implementing the remediation of contaminated aquifers. This paper summarizes the current status of modeling ground-water flow and contaminant transport in fractured rock systems.
