About EPA's Quality System

EPA uses its Quality System to manage the quality of its environmental data collection, generation, and use. The primary goal of the Quality System is to ensure that our environmental data are of sufficient quantity and quality to support the data's intended use. Under the EPA Quality System, EPA organizations develop and implement supporting quality systems. Similar specifications may also apply to contractors, grantees, and other recipients of financial assistance from EPA.

The EPA Quality System also provides the framework for planning, implementing, documenting, and assessing work performed by the Agency and for carrying out required quality assurance and quality control activities.

Oversight for EPA’s Quality System is delegated to the Director of the Quality Staff within the EPA Office of Environmental Information.  The Quality Staff consists of approximately 12 professionals who work in the areas of Policy and Evaluation, Operations and Outreach, and the Information Quality Guidelines process.
