Ohio’s Public Water System Supervision Program Revisions

EPA asked for public comments on its tentative decision to approve the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s revised public water system supervision program, which complies with federal regulations. Ohio EPA has revised two of its rules to comply with the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, including the Long-Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule and the Lead and Copper Rule Short-Term Revisions and Clarifications. The comment period ended Friday, May 23, 2014.

States that administer their own drinking water programs must adopt rules that are consistent with and at least as stringent as EPA’s regulations. EPA has determined that these two drinking water rules meet these criteria.

Ohio EPA’s rule revisions includes requirements that improve control of microbial pathogens in drinking water, specifically the protozoan Cryptosporidium, and address risk trade-offs with disinfection byproducts.

The rules also strengthen the implementation of the Lead and Copper Rule, which protects public health by reducing exposure to lead in drinking water, in the following areas:
  • monitoring,
  • treatment processes,
  • public education,
  • consumer awareness,
  • and lead service line replacement.
