Inland HABs Discussion Group

Mission Statement:

To continue and enhance communication on inland harmful algal bloom issues related to research, monitoring, human and ecological health risk assessment, education, and outreach.

History of the Group:

This informal discussion group was created out of an expressed need by federal researchers and state agencies to bridge a communication gap with respect to inland HAB research, monitoring, human and ecological health risk assessment, education, and outreach. This group had its genesis out of earlier efforts such as the ISOC-HAB (International Symposium on Cyanobacteria Harmful Algal Blooms) meeting sponsored by US EPA in 2005, HABISS (harmful Algal Blooms-Related Illness Surveillance System) sponsored by CDC, the AOAC Marine and Freshwater Toxins Community, and USGS efforts assisting states with sample collection and study design guidance. This group was formed and facilitated by CDC, USGS and EPA and has been meeting by conference call since May 2011.
