MEDIA ADVISORY: U.S. EPA, Partners to Hold Symposium on Mosquito-Borne Diseases along U.S.-Mexico Border

LOS ANGELES -- A binational symposium exploring climate and the spread of vector-borne diseases such as Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses will be held September 27 in Mexicali, B.C., Mexico. The symposium is free and will offer strategies for protecting the communities located within the California/Baja California and Arizona/Sonora regions.

Sessions will focus on the clinical aspects, diagnosis, and treatment of Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya viruses; methods for vector control and personal protection against mosquito bites; and resources for messaging campaigns. Goals for the symposium include:

  • Increasing knowledge of vector-borne health risks in the U.S.-Mexico border region;
  • Increasing the capacity of healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, environmental professionals, promotores, and the public to address or mitigate vector-borne health issues; and
  • Facilitating networking and knowledge-sharing to promote collaboration across disciplines to resolve vector-borne diseases.
