MEDIA ADVISORY: TODAY EPA Administrator McCarthy Delivers Keynote Address at The Global Opportunities for Long-Term Development in the ASGM Sector Kickoff Event

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy will deliver the keynote address for the Global Environment Facility (GEF)’s the Global Opportunities for Long-Term Development (GOLD) in the ASGM Sector kickoff event.

Administrator McCarthy’s address at the GOLD kickoff event will focus on why the world should care about mercury use in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), and the importance of private sector engagement in ASGM. The two-day event will bring together key players in ASGM, including governments, agencies, NGOs, and the private sector, to address the ASGM sector, including provisions to address mercury pollution from the sector.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) works with partners, including the private sector, to address environmental issues around the world. The GEF also provides funding for many international environmental conventions, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
