From the late 1800s to the 1960s, the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Company (or VCC) owned and operated phosphate fertilizer facilities across the southeastern United States. In 2000, EPA Region 4 and ExxonMobil formed a collaborative agreement known as the VCC Initiative to address the contamination at the properties (also known as VCC sites) where these facilities once operated. Since 2000, ExxonMobil has cleaned up 27 former VCC sites, and worked with property owners and local communities to make site re-use and redevelopment a reality.

The EPA views the cleanup and revitalization of communities once affected by contaminated sites as a key component of its mission to protect human health and the environment. The VCC Initiative has proven to be an excellent opportunity for EPA Region 4 to work with ExxonMobil and their contractors to clean up 27 VCC sites across the southeast, .
