EPA Recognizes City of Fort Worth for WaterSense Outreach
DALLAS – (Oct. 6, 2016) Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced
Fort Worth, Texas, as one of only nine cities nationwide recognized for excellence in promoting EPA’s WaterSense program, which helps people use less water with water-efficient products and services. Fort Worth earned an Excellence Award for Education and Outreach for events that reached a range of audiences.
“All Texans understand how precious our water resources are, and Fort Worth continually shows dedication and creativity in promoting conservation,” said Regional Administrator Ron Curry. “Fort Worth has again proven to be a valuable WaterSense partner.”
Fort Worth engages its residents with a variety of water-saving events and programs that reach children, homeowners, and businesses. The city’s SmartFlush Toilet program has distributed 4,735 WaterSense labeled toilets to residential and commercial customers, saving more than 57,780,000 gallons of water. Fort Worth also partnered with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Home Depot to promote water-efficient landscapes through plant sales, water bill inserts, and an e-magazine. Additionally, residential and commercial water-use audits saved more than 20 million gallons by finding and correcting inefficiencies.
The city has held several special events to raise awareness of the importance of conservation, including a 5K race with a “Chasing Leaks, Fixing Flappers” theme. The event included demonstrations on how to find and fix leaks and showing how much water a leaking toilet wastes. The city also participated in a two-day festival for fifth graders called Waterama, educating students on water use, treatment, and reclamation, and hosted the Water Efficiency @ Work symposium for commercial and industrial facilities to learn about water-efficiency best practices.
Since 2006, EPA’s WaterSense program has worked to protect the future of the nation's water supply by offering Americans a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services. WaterSense labeled products, which are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models, have been on the market since 2007 when toilets first earned the label. Since then, the number of labeled models has grown to more than 16,000, including products found in residential and commercial bathrooms, commercial kitchens, and for outdoor irrigation. EPA’s WaterSense program certifies homes with WaterSense labeled fixtures and features. To date more than 700 homes have earned the WaterSense label.
