EPA proposes adding Riverside Groundwater Contamination site in Indianapolis to Superfund cleanup list

CHICAGO (April 6, 2016) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced a proposal to add the Riverside Groundwater Contamination site in Indianapolis to the National Priorities List. The NPL is EPA's list of Superfund sites. Superfund is the federal program that investigates and cleans up the most complex uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country.

In 2012, a plume of chlorinated solvents was discovered at the site which is near the Riverside and White River municipal well fields. EPA has been working with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to resolve the issue. To date, only low levels of contaminants have been found in some municipal wells. The concentrations of chlorinated solvents detected are well within federal and state drinking water standards. Citizen's Energy Group is treating the drinking water and has been meeting all EPA requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

EPA's Riverside Groundwater Contamination site proposal will be published in the Federal Register on April 6. EPA will accept public comments for 60 days following publication.
