EPA to hold public meeting next week on upcoming lead cleanup at residences near American Lead site, Indianapolis

CHICAGO (Sept.1, 2016) -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2016, at Oasis of Hope Baptist Church, 1701 E. 25th St. in Indianapolis, Ind., to discuss its plan to remove lead-contaminated soil from residential properties near the former American Lead facility.
EPA will begin the estimated $5 million cleanup in late September to protect public health. EPA plans to dig two feet down to excavate lead-contaminated soil from residential yards and dispose of it at a licensed facility. Landscaping will be restored following the soil removal work.
EPA will target up to 100 properties in an area encompassed by 25th Street to the north, Ralston Avenue to the northeast, along the railroad to Interstate 70 with I-70 forming the southern border, and the Monon Trail to the west.
The American Lead site is located in the historic Martindale-Brightwood residential neighborhood. In 2005, NL Industries under EPA oversight removed lead-contaminated soil from 224 residential yards.
