EPA Grant Will Help Groundwork New Orleans Build Resilient Communities
DALLAS – (Dec. 8, 2016) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that Groundwork New Orleans, Inc., received a $29,995 cooperative agreement for a project to help communities build resiliency through clean energy.
The project focuses on teaching students to design, build, and install solar powered charging benches on or near bus stops in underserved communities. This will provide clean energy sources for public transportation users, educate community members, and provide a green power within the community in case of emergency.
"The Groundwork New Orleans is excited about Building Climate Resilient Communities through funding from the EPA-Gulf of Mexico Program. Through this EPA Environmental Small Grant we will not only be able to provide clean energy sources for public transportation users, educate community members, and provide a green power source within the community in case of an emergency but also provide valuable job training skills to young adults,” said Alicia Neal.
“It’s always energizing to engage with students to help them make a difference in their own communities. We’re pleased to be partnering with Groundwork New Orleans on this green power initiative,” said Ben Scaggs, Director, EPA-Gulf of Mexico Program.
This cooperative agreement will further the strategic goals and objectives of Gulf of Mexico Program and lead to a healthy and prosperous ecosystem.
